Interviews and mixing up towns.....

so, today has been interview day (again)

spent best part o last nite writhing up my discriptions of all the peices in my portforlio..... so you can see how much work i ''havn't'' done, heres the full document:

Gwen SallabankArt and Design Foundation DiplomaAbingdon and Witney College

A little about me:

I spent the last two years studying a National Diploma in Public Services, with the precept of joining the Royal Navy. Approximately half way through the course I took the decision to change pathways back to Art and Design, to mainly give myself a challenge and to re-ignite my enthusiasm for the subject.

This Portfolio is entirely made up from works from the first two terms of the Art and Design Foundation Diploma Course.Where possible I have included the written briefs that correlate with the works I have also added my own comments on each of the pieces and written descriptions of the briefs where no written version was originally given.

All the pages are in order with the portfolio.

0,4
Two A1 sheets
This was a part illustration, part graphics brief; we were instructed to chose two digits and explore different ways of illustrating them together in a square format. The final square was photocopied four times and the squares arranged in a athestatic manner.

I chose the numbers 0 and 4 because I wanted to explore the contrast between the forms.

Tower of Biscuits
One A1 sheet

The basic brief was to balance a variety of biscuits on each other (a challenge in its self), and draw them from a low perspective to create a monolithic and monumental piece.
Brief attached.

‘Luxurious Surroundings’
One A1 sheet

This was a one-day painting project.
The life model was placed in a ‘luxurious’ setting with rich fabrics and props surrounding her and a red-head spotlight providing the main directional lighting. This made her skin appear extremely ‘milky’ and smooth in contrast to the bright and rich colours that surrounded her
The objective of the brief was to communicate the richness of the model’s surroundings and the contrasts between light and texture through paint and working back into the paint with pastels and other dry media.
This is one of two pieces I produced in the day.

Minimal Line life model drawing
Three A1 sheets

This was another one-day drawing project. The purpose of the drawing project was to use single flowing lines to represent entire forms and shapes within the figure
The first two sheets are of the model in three different positions, keeping only one part of the body in the same position (hips, then feet, respectively). It was a challenge to keep the proportions and perspective accurate throughout each pose and as a whole composition.

Monoprinting pt. 1
One A1 sheet

This is one of two mini-series I created in a one day printing introduction project. I particularly like this piece because of the ‘happy accident’ that occurred through the ink being absorbed by the stencil-mask I used for the centre print. The result, and ‘happy accident’ created through re-printing directly from the ink is on the left, with the stencil on the right.
Brief attached.
‘Towers and Totems’
One A1 sheet

Unfortunately, due to a college trip the previous week, this project was cut to a one day project.
The basic brief was to create a five-storey structure that reflected five main events or periods of time in our lives.
The sculpture is constructed from five cubes I made using colour photographs photocopied onto acetate and then laminated in cube nets. The cubes are all different and a few contain objects within them. They are suspended from one-another from the ceiling.
I made this piece extremely personal:
The first period (bottom level) concentrated on my birth and early life; I collected photographs from my birth and used them as a composite.
The second period (second level up) concentrates on my life between the ages of 12-15: when I started at my secondary school. During my time there I was bullied and excluded. The photos are of my ‘den’ that I would visit after school to be alone (-by choice – and to avoid others walking home) and to collect my feelings before returning home. The cube contains dead leaves from the trees that made up the ‘den’.
The third period (middle) focuses on my first ‘serious’ relationship: Tom. The relationship with Tom lasted eight months, for the last two of which he was (extremely) and repeatedly unfaithful. The cube comprises of photos of him and letters I wrote to him, but never delivered, describing my true feelings for him, before and after we separated. Inside the cube hangs a silver heart pendent he gave to me, proclaiming it to be ‘his heart’ and that it “belonged to me now”.
The forth level (second down) represents a very private part of my life. From approximately the age of 15 I have self – harmed through cutting the tops of my arms. I have only really stopped within the last year. I used Spray-Mount to create the ‘frosted’ effect of the plastic and hung razor blades inside the cube. The blood is my own, sealed with the Spray-Mount.
The last level (top) represents my life now (or at least as it was when the sculpture was made, last October).is comprises of photos of my friends: my ‘family’ who I care about the most and who I know care about me. It hopefully represents my future as time of happiness.
Brief attached.

Mapping the Body: All her Scars (Physical and Psychological)
Two photos mounted on A3

These two sculptures are from our first self-directed project. The title of the brief was ‘Mapping the Body’; I chose to base my project on mapping the body thorough scars. I created two ‘bodies’ using Barbie dolls and mod-roc and then cut into them to represent the scars of the body: – my body; all my physical scars and secondly, all the psychological scars, for example; a hole where the heart should be, representing too many broken hearts.

Mark Making
One A1 sheet

This was a two day project where we explored processes of making marks to represent an object. One of the methods I used was burning carpet to create the pieces shown. I sprayed the basic form of the object onto the carpet with flammable aerosol (hairspray) before igniting the liquid spray and allowing the carpet to burn till the desired effect was accomplished.

Egg Box
Photograph mounted on A3

The brief was to redesign the basic egg box. We had to use recyclable materials and consider athestetics as part of the design. For this I researched the history of the egg box and packaging, with particular attention to traditional Japanese paper packaging.
Brief attached.
Bamboo
One A1 sheet

Another drawing exercise; we constructed an installation of bamboo caned in a large lattice and hung it from the ceiling. We experimented using black and white media and drawing techniques to show the space occupied by the bamboo.

Shoyu
One A1 sheet

This was a purely design brief. We were to design any component of the identity for a new Japanese restaurant. I chose to concentrate on the company logo, the uniform of staff and the chopstick logo design. This project particularly interested me as I have a great interest in the Japanese culture.
Brief attached.

Metamorphosis
One A1 sheet

This was the first illustration brief we received. The project was three weeks long; in the first week we made a series of studies of beetles and insects in the Natural History Museum in Oxford, the following weeks were dedicated to conception and production of the images.
Brief attached.

The Economist: WMD: Fact or Fiction?
One A1 sheet

This was a one day project. We were given a brief outline of the nature of The Economist magazine. We were then given headline “WMD: Fact or Fiction?” to which we had too produce two outcomes. The Economist logo and Barcode were provided. My images were based around two ideas: the “Red Herrings” issue of the actual WMDs and the ‘coalitions’ of Blair and Bush, and of Saddam and Osma Bin Laden.

Business Cards : Personal Representation
One A1 sheet

This was a graphics brief where we were to use what ever images we chose to create “calling cards” for ourselves. To only compulsory points of the brief was that we had to produce at least four different responses and there had to be at least two ‘layers’ of images within the image.

Monoprinting pt.2
Two A1 sheets

The second Mini Series made on the monoprinting day – the ‘Angel’ series – I used the stencil-mask effect to great effect in these images.
See Monoprinting pt. 1 for Brief.

Greenpeace posters
Two A1 sheets

We were given three of Greenpeace’s main focuses to choose from to illustrate four different responses in a poster format.
In the latest lesson we converted one of our images in to a silkscreen print.
Briefs attached.

Process as Painting: Cards
Three A1 sheets, three loose pieces and one A1 Process sheet.

This was essentially a painting project, except we were banned from using paintbrushes! Instead we experimented using dripping, smearing, splashing and hand painting. The brief was to abstract a playing card through all these process. My card was the King of Hearts. I was also given a Seven of Clubs, which I also used.
I enjoyed using the paints in different ways and getting (very, very) messy!
Brief Attached.

Declomania: The Butterfly Effect
Two photographs mounted on A2

This was a project mainly instigated as an introduction to darkroom processes. The images were made by folding small pieces of acetate in half and spreading out gouash , then re-opening the acetate. The acetate was dried and then used in an enlarger a photographic negative.Brief attached.

Wallpaper
One A1 sheet

We created an installation in one of the studios by hanging wallpaper in strips from the ceiling. We then had a life model stand and sit within the installation and we painted her in first using a ‘painterly’ style then using outline to create a ‘graphic look’. This piece is one of four pieces I created on the day. When we painted this particular pose the only part of the model I could see was her knee!
Brief attached

“Written on the Body”
Four A1 sheets and loose final Book cover (Jackets)

This is from the second self directed project. We were given choices of basic briefs according to our specialisation, and we had to work from a created installation (clothes hung from the ceiling with text projected onto them – see photos on first worksheet). The Illustration brief was to design a contemporary cover for the book “Written on the Body” by Jeanette Winterson. I researched the details of the book online and worked from a few found quotes. The image is from where I (literally) wrote on the body and took photographs, which I later manipulated in Photoshop.I enjoyed being able to work on my own ideas independently and have a final and finished product (the book dust jackets) at the end of the project.

“The Book project”
Photographs mounted on A2

In this short one day project we destroyed books in order to create new sculptural forms! I cut up the pages of two old children’s books and made (41) origami triangles and attached them to paper ‘springs’ to bring in the third dimension. I then re-attached the sprung triangles to one of the remaining book covers.Brief attached.

‘Message in a Bottle’ Photogram
Photogram mounted on A3

Using an ornate Glass bottle and Strips of ‘curled’ acetate I created the photogram by placing the objects onto photographic paper and exposing the paper. The light reflected within the glass created quite intriguing patterns.

“Alter Ego”
Three photographs mounted on A2

‘A little something to remember me by….’The project was to introduce us to lighting techniques and developing from negatives in the darkroom.
We were encouraged to come in as our ‘Alter Ego’ for the entire day – which I did. After much deliberation I chose to attend as a Japanese High School girl to reflect my passion for the Japanese culture and Japanese Manga and Anime.

so, got up at stupid o'clock today and got train to portsmouth.....
[i hate trains]
got to portsmouth and spent 15 mins gettin lost in the "University Quater", eventually foung the right building (no blody signposts o' course). got there, the builging and studios werent great, and the guy was pretty dismissive aout everything, so im not so keen on portsmouth now....

got train to Southampton and in a fit of lazyness got a taxi to the institute 30 mins early, there were nearly 20 of us for interview! crazy..... *mutter*
so, when the bloke (eventually) arrived, we all left portfolios in one studio while we got a 90 min tour. then returned, collected portfolio (mine's COMPLETLY out of order - poss a good thing). was interesting that they didnt talk to us even a lil.... still, thay have bloody good facilities - almost as good as kent....

so, new plan for route B :
fuck portsmouth and plymouth: they both be shit, my options are now:
1st: Kent - Illustration
2nd: Leeds - Visual Communications

3rd: Herefordshire - Illustration

so... yea.... :P

hopeing to get into so'ton now tho.....

got home, collapsed, sorted out portfoilio then have been online trying to mediate between smo and andrew....
think its all a lil harsh sometimes - ::remembers school life [:'( ] ::

anyways... holy shit its my birthday tomoro........ :P ;)

Raising hopes ?

raising hopes every time the link is clicked, and dashing them seconds later with the same paragraph or text appearing as has done every other time for the last 2 months

- as Abi so delightfully put it ;)

so, ok, I know.........

but for the sake of sanity (and my memory not being what it was [ I AM 19 next week.....] ) I will defiantly attempt to ignore the many *interesting* things that have ahappened to me in the last 2 (?!?) months....

A few essential points to keep any reader's (I have readers?? Why are you reading this????) mind in vague working condition though;

had various interviews:

One of these being at Swansea
basic points of Swansea interview:

got lost trying to find the damn place;

walked OFF my map of Swansea town centre

found campus at top of VERY steep and BIG hill (guess that's why they called it a Mount....)

got to reception (nice of put it up MORE stairs...), got told I had to go further up the MOUNTAIN, and then in the FOURTH FLOOR - thank fuck for lifts

had interview

got place :D ;)
[its condtional on that I get a pass - so in other words - I gotta place :P ]

Had another interview at surrey

didn't get Sooooo lost.... - no hill either :D

From start wasn't too impressed - they didn't even give a tour! - we (there were 15 of us (!?!)) were herded into a room, told to leave out portfolios and told to bugger off for half an hour!

then had a shoddy interview - didn't care about my work or me; all they wanted to hear that they were the best and I wanted to go to them - which I don't.

they've offered me a place - but I don't want it (guess I should tell them really.....)

Went on the college trip thing to Zagreb and Ljubjiana (I think that's the spelling :s) - so... YAY LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - it was knee deep out of the city and atleast 3" in the city - Andrew kept walkin across flower beds cos he didn't realize they were there ^^
the whole trip was quite fun, but eh fact it was only 7 days and 3 of them were traveling - kinda killed it.

favorite bits:

The cable car ride across the mountains - I was suddenly infactuated with trees and snow - I took over 100 photos!

Ljubjiana in general - it was just cleaner, nicer and sunnier than icky urban Zageb

The pasta we had for lunch - it was so good I has two bowls! (I dint have any breakfast)

The concert on the last nite - I doth now believeth that all live music is amazing (note : all forms of townie "music" (ie pop, r&b, rap etc....) cannot be live - it has NO REAL INSTRUMENTS!)

The plane jouneys - clouds are so beautiful sometimes - especially when from above (they were rain clouds after all ;) :P )

so, then had a wholy uneventful half term, followed but the last few weeks of uneventful college work

went to see Kent (KIAD) last week me to Maidstone campus and andrej to Rochester - we traveled as far a london together.

then it was Pete's birthday thing !

at this point i believe its it better for ppl to read Abi's blog for details of the nite and funny pics (here:
http://sp00ngirl.blogspot.com/2005/02/story-behind-photos-petes-birthday.html and: http://sp00ngirl.blogspot.com/2005/02/pictures-from-petes-birthday-bash.html) but highlights were:

Food! (at last i got some lunch!)

Me asking Smo when he last got laid and him taking nearly a quater of a hour to answer before i pointed out that drunken one nighter's don't count

Andrew's attempts at dancing and Pete's dancing in general

The RANDOM guy that tried hitting on me first then Abi THROUGH REALLY CREEPY DANCING - i mean it - worse than Andrew's!

The Pool and the aftermath (i won both ;) :D )

Smo's "Gay Chicken" - where he was too drunk to stop and Andrew was too shocked to realise in time

Pete's Face in reaction to it all

Andew flipping Smo off'f him and onto another chair in response (eventually) and skewering smo on said chair

Smo attempting to chat up Sarah (to Pete's dismay and worry - dont worry She's got ALOT more sense than THAT)

My selotaping of Smo's attempt at chest hair and his resulting agony (see here:
http://photos1.blogger.com/img/115/1056/640/IMG_3045.jpg)

walking through a desserted oxford at 5 am and it snowing

sleeping through Paul's lecture

------------------------------------------------------------------

so im not sure what else TO say.....

got lost in exeter today - then VERY bored on trains, panicking about route B.......

HAPPY NOW ABI??????????????

^^ ;) ^^
